Adding Fractions with Common Units

Use common denominators to add fractions and explain why the denominator represents the unit size.

Published lesson

Add like-sized parts

When fractions have the same denominator, add their numerators and keep the denominator because the parts have the same size.

For different denominators, first rewrite the fractions with a common denominator. Then add the numerators and simplify when possible.

1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4
