Choose Slack if: Your organization wants a polished hosted chat product with an app directory, Slack Connect and no servers to run (per slack.com).
Choose Element if: You want sovereign, end-to-end encrypted, interoperable Matrix messaging — self-hosted or air-gapped, with no per-seat license (per element.io).
Overall: Slack is the more turn-key hosted option, but free history is limited to 90 days and integrations to 10 apps. Element is free and open source with E2EE by default, but you either self-host a Matrix homeserver or use Element's paid Server Suite for enterprise support.

Slack (slack.com) is a hosted team-messaging platform built around channels, huddles and a large app directory. Element (element.io) is a Matrix client — free and open source — with end-to-end encryption by default and interoperability across the Matrix network.

- Slack: Free forever with 90-day searchable history; Pro from about $8.25/user/month; Business+ adds retention and SSO; Enterprise+ is custom (slack.com/pricing).
- Element: the app is free forever for personal use; Element Server Suite Community is a free open-source distribution; ESS Pro is priced per seat and Sovereign ESS Pro per deployment (element.io/pricing).
Where they differ
- Slack encrypts data at rest and in transit and keeps setup simple — but the free tier limits history (90 days) and app integrations (10).
- Element is E2EE by default, open source, and interoperates with any Matrix homeserver — but production features (certifications, SLA, SBOM) sit behind the paid Element Server Suite.
- Slack Connect supports messaging across organizations; Element/Matrix lets you run your own homeserver for full data ownership.
- Element's Community distribution is explicitly aimed at non-production use for 1-100 users.
Bottom line
If you value zero-administration and a huge app catalog, Slack is the straightforward choice. If encryption-by-default, open source and sovereign/self-hosted communication are requirements, Element (Matrix) is the better fit.
